| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE Colonel Michael D. Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP A - NEWS RELEASE August 27, 2009 Unrestrained Driver Killed in Single-Vehicle Crash BATON ROUGE – A single-vehicle crash in East Baton Rouge Parish claimed the life of a Natchez man overnight on US 61 near Pride/Port Hudson Road. The crash occurred at approximately 1:00 a.m. Charles Buchannan (B/M, age 38) of Natchez, MS was driving a 2009 Dodge Charger south on US 61 at a very high rate of speed when he veered right and exited the roadway. The vehicle struck a private driveway, became airborne, and then overturned several times. Buchannan and his front seat passenger, Jonathan Humphrey (B/M, age 23) of Baton Rouge, were both unrestrained and ejected from the vehicle. Buchannan was pronounced deceased on the scene by the East Baton Rouge Coroner’s Office. Humphrey sustained moderate injuries and was taken to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital by Baton Rouge EMS. The two passengers sitting in the rear seat were both properly restrained when the crash occurred and were NOT ejected from the vehicle. Conner Mantrean (B/M, age 20) of Natchez, MS and Larry Foster (B/M, age 20) of Baton Rouge both sustained only minor injuries in this violent crash and were also taken to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital by Baton Rouge EMS. Troopers investigating the crash believe that speed was a factor in the crash. Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor. However, Troopers have submitted a sample of Buchannan’s blood to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for chemical analysis. Louisiana law now requires everyone inside a passenger vehicle to wear a seat belt. When involved in a violent crash, the safest place for vehicle occupants to be is INSIDE the vehicle. The only way to ensure this is to be properly restrained, regardless of the seating position inside the vehicle. BUCKLE UP…SEAT BELTS SAVE LIVES!!! Contact Information: Tpr Russell G.
