HEADQUARTERS NEWS RELEASE March 13, 2013 Law Enforcement Leaders from Across North America Descend on the Crescent City NEW ORLEANS - Beginning Wednesday, March 13, 2013, New Orleans will see the arrival of State and Provincial Police Superintendents and Commanders from across North America. Agency leaders are convening to discuss current public safety issues and operational practices during the 2013 International Association of Chiefs of Police - State and Provincial Police Midyear Meeting. Founded in 1938, the IACP’s Division of State & Provincial Police (S&P) has the responsibility of organizing, directing, coordinating, and promoting IACP programs relating to the needs of state and provincial police agencies. The division is a membership organization comprised of 49 state law enforcement agencies, the Puerto Rico National Police, and three provincial police agencies; the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), Ontario Provincial Police, Sureté du Québec. The State and Provincial Police division’s goals are to address key policy issues, facilitate information sharing amongst S&P agencies, and cross-jurisdictional problem solving. S&P members convene twice a year during the annual meeting held in conjunction with the IACP Annual Conference as well as a mid-year conference each spring. On the agenda for the New Orleans conference are discussions on school safety including Connecticut State Police Colonel Danny Stebbins who will provide the latest information regarding the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. Other topics include officer safety and wellness, international and domestic terrorism, disaster response, and other best practices and lessons learned. The conference will conclude with a Friday night banquet honoring the 4 Trooper of the Year nominees and the announcement of this year’s award recipient. General Chair of the State and Provincial Police division and Superintendent of the Louisiana State Police, Colonel Mike Edmonson stated, “The Louisiana State Police is honored to serve as the host agency for this year’s S&P conference.
