2013 LSP Awards Ceremony Honors Heroes from Across the State

Baton Rouge – On Thursday, May 16, 2013, Louisiana State Police held an awards ceremony to honor Troopers, officers from various statewide law enforcement and first responder agencies, and civilians for their extraordinary efforts over the past year. The ceremony was held at 1:00 pm in the Louisiana State Police Training Academy Auditorium on Independence Blvd. in Baton Rouge. Stories of bravery, dedication, and exceptional work ethic were the common themes throughout the ceremony. Awards that were presented to these extraordinary public servants are as follows:

Medal of Valor – For conspicuous and intrepid gallantry at the risk of the officer’s or citizen’s life while having full knowledge of that risk. The act must be clearly above and beyond the call of duty.

    · M/T Donald Callais, Jr. (TESS)
        o For conspicuous and intrepid gallantry at the risk of his own life with regard to his actions on February 24, 2012 while rescuing an elderly female from a burning building.
Lifesaving Award – For any act which saves or sustains the life of another.

    · Sgt. Derrick Stewart (Troop B)
        o For heroic actions on December 13, 2012 at a vehicle crash in St. Charles Parish where he rendered life-saving aid to a trapped driver.
    · M/T Stacy L. Cole (Troop E) and DPTY Jacob Matthews (Sabine SO)
        o For heroic actions on June 23, 2012 after a vehicle pursuit in Sabine Parish where they apprehended a suspect who was ultimately charged with attempted 2nd degree murder, and by rendering life-saving aid to a victim of the suspect.
    · Sgt. Larry Anderson (Troop B), Sgt. Kevin Cannatella (Troop B), M/T Chris Maurin (Troop B), TFC David Easley (Troop B), and DPTY Anthony Cox (St. John SO)
        o For heroic actions on September 11, 2012 while working a DSNAP site in St. John Parish in which they identified and approached a disgruntled individual who was heavily armed and made credible threats against the lives of other individuals.
    · DPTY Damien Davidson (Livingston SO) and DPTY Tony Edwards (Livingston SO)
        o For heroic actions on June 6, 2012 at a vehicle crash in Livingston Parish where they rendered life-saving aid to a driver trapped in a burning vehicle.
    · DPTY Darron Cooper (Catahoula SO), DPTY Jason McMillin (Catahoula SO), and Senior Agent Robbie Mayo (LDW&F)
        o For heroic actions on July 28, 2012 at a vehicle crash in Catahoula Parish where they rendered life-saving aid to a three individuals trapped inside a burning vehicle, ultimately saving the life of one.
Uniformed Trooper of the Year (nominees) – For an individual who has demonstrated unusual skill and ability in performing his or her duties both on and off of the job.

Blue Max Award– For the Trooper who has recovered the most stolen vehicles w/ arrests in a 12 month period.

    · TFC Ryan Zimmerman (Troop B) 9 recoveries

Meritorious Service Award – For performance of duty that exceeds the normal expectations of duty and demonstrates an exceptional degree of good judgment, initiative, and competence.

    · S/T Wayne Coates (Troop B)
        o For performance of duty exceeding normal expectations on June 11, 2012 for responding to a BOLO and locating a kidnapped woman and her two children.
    · Lt. Todd Toloudis (Troop C)
        o For performance of duty exceeding normal expectations on January 21, 2012 by assisting a fellow Trooper apprehend a suspect by volunteering to be lowered by rescue personnel off of a bridge into a marsh.
    · M/T Raynell Theard (Gaming Enf), S/T Jeffrey Argrave (Gaming Enf), TFC Justin Berry (Gamin Enf), TFC Russell Brue (Gaming Enf), and ITT-3 Arnold “Rick” Valladares (Gaming Enf)
        o For performance of duty exceeding normal expectations during August, 2012 by assisting FBI – New Orleans Field Office identify and locate 8 individuals involved in a bank robbery investigation.
    · M/T Katie Morel (BOI Region 2)
        o For performance of duty exceeding normal expectations on May 20, 2012 by assisting in the arrest of a suspect in the high-profile “Mickey Shunick” missing person’s case in Lafayette. The arrest also resulted in the confession and arrest of the suspect in another unsolved homicide.
    · M/T John Brannon Peters (BOI Region 3)
        o For performance of duty exceeding normal expectations by contributing to a drug trafficking investigation in Caddo Parish which led to the federal indictment of 14 subjects and the arrests of 7 additional subjects on state charges.
    · TFC Steven Vincent (Troop D)
        o For performance of duty exceeding normal expectations on April 2, 2012 by conducting a traffic stop and documentation of an individual which resulted in the identification and arrest of a Slidell bank robbery suspect.
    · Sgt. Neal Harwell (BOI Region 3)
        o For performance of duty exceeding normal expectations on October 11, 2012 by interviewing and obtaining the confession of a rape suspect from Arkansas who had sexually assaulted a juvenile.

Superintendents Award for Excellence – The Superintendent has the discretion to issue this award to individuals, sections, or troops in recognition of outstanding performance or achievement. The award may also be conferred on individuals, companies, schools, or other entities apart from State Police.
