HEADQUARTERS - NEWS RELEASE August 11, 2011 LSP to Use Technology to Enhance Public Safety Services Baton Rouge – Louisiana State Police announced this week that they are moving along with the times as only the sixth state police agency in the country to begin using Nixle in an effort to enhance information sharing and public safety across the state. Nixle is a Community Information Service built exclusively for secure and reliable communications. The Nixle service is built on the most authenticated, secure, reliable, and high-speed platform, ensuring communications are trusted and accurate. Nixle’s computer-based information sharing platform would allow LSP to communicate with Louisiana’s citizens by text message or email. It is a secure way to share information with a large number of people in a very short amount of time. This could prove to be beneficial during a disaster as it would allow us to alert citizens to evacuation orders, major road closures, parish curfews, or general emergency alerts. On a broader scale, Nixle could be used daily by LSP to broadcast Amber Alerts, emergency notices, or interstate closures. One of the most appealing features of Nixle is that these alerts can be sent statewide, or sent to persons signed up in a specific geographic area. Currently, over 4,300 public safety agencies use Nixle across the country, including five state police agencies. There are several carriers that support Nixle, including AT&T, Sprint/Nextel, Verizon, U.S. Cellular, T-Mobile, and Virgin Mobile. Citizens can sign up by going to www.nixle.com and filling out the required information. “Public safety is our top priority, and this is just one more tool we have available to ensure we get the latest public safety information out there,” said Colonel Mike Edmonson, State Police Superintendent. “This is a great tool that will allow us to get critical information out to as many people as possible timely and accurately. It is our responsibility in this information age to use the technology that is available to us to ensure that we are serving the public to the best of our abilities.” Troop A in Baton Rouge and Troop L in Mandeville will pilot the program and streamline the process before it is launched statewide. The public, as well as the media, is encouraged to sign up for Nixle alerts by going to the website and selecting Louisiana State Police as their agency. Troopers would like to remind motorists that the Nixle service is designed to keep them informed and is provided to enhance information sharing concerning public safety. It is easy to become distracted while driving your vehicle, and every person utilizing the Nixle service is reminded to plan ahead before leaving for their destination or utilize Nixle during travel stops.
