Edmonson, Superintendent HEADQUARTERS- NEWS RELEASE Louisiana State Police Memorial Ceremony BATON ROUGE- On Wednesday, May 13, 2009, the Louisiana State Police honored and remembered the dedicated men and women of law enforcement who made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting and serving others. Nationally, an average 150 police officers from various agencies are killed in the line of duty each year. Since 1925, 24 Louisiana State Troopers have lost their lives while serving the citizens of Louisiana. “This ceremony is one of the most important events we do as a DPS family,” said Colonel Mike Edmonson, State Police Superintendent. “We have a moral obligation to honor the service and families of officers who have died while serving our state. We must never forget those sacrifices. The families left behind should always be in our thoughts and prayers.” Highlights from the ceremony included: · Mr. Joel Kees (Joel was 2 years old when his father, Trooper William “Mike” Kees, died in the line duty) read the memorial poem called “The Monument”. · Colonel Michael Edmonson, State Police Superintendent, placed a wreath in front of the Memorial and spoke about the importance of remembering our fallen brothers. · The names and end of watch date for all 24 troopers were read aloud while the LSP Honor Guard saluted and placed a rose on each plaque. · "Amazing Grace" was played on bagpipes by the Caledonian Society · 21 gun salute by the LSP Honor Guard · Taps was played by the LSP Honor Guard · Helicopter Fly-Over by LSP Air Support Please visit the Louisiana State Police Memorial Website at: www.lsp.org/memorial.html for more information on each fallen trooper.
