Pedestrian Struck and Killed on I-10 Bridge

BATON ROUGE – A Port Allen man was killed last night at approximately 8:30 p.m. on the Interstate 10 Mississippi River Bridge when he was struck by a vehicle. Michael Towns (W/M, age 37) of Port Allen was walking in the westbound travel lane of the I-10 Bridge when he was struck by a 2007 Hummer.

Troop A received a phone call from a passing motorist regarding a person walking on the westbound travel lanes of the Mississippi River Bridge and dispatched a Trooper to the bridge to investigate the call. As the Trooper crossed the bridge eastbound, he saw Towns walking east in the westbound travel lane. The Trooper immediately activated his emergency lights and exited his unit. Towns suddenly walked further into the lanes of travel and was struck by the Hummer.

Alcohol is suspected to have been a factor in this crash on Towns’ part. The driver of the Hummer, Jodie T. Melancon (W/F, age 41) of New Roads, was not impaired, properly restrained, and uninjured in the crash. Troopers have submitted a sample of Towns’ blood to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for chemical analysis. Melancon voluntarily submitted a breath sample to the Intoxilyzer 5000, which showed that she had no detectable alcohol in her system. No charges have been filed in this crash.
