STATE POLICE ARREST MONROE TROOPER

A state police trooper was arrested in Monroe today by state police investigators and was booked on two felony counts of indecent behavior with a juvenile. These charges stem from inappropriate on-line communications with a trooper posing as a juvenile, according to Colonel Mike Edmonson, State Police Superintendent.

Jonathon Williams, 29, West Monroe, was taken into custody by troopers without incident at Troop F in Monroe for warrants out of Rapides Parish and was immediately terminated from his position by Colonel Edmonson. Williams was a probationary officer assigned to Troop F in Monroe and was a recent graduate (02/06/09) of the State Police Academy.

There is no initial indication that Williams used his position in State Police or his status as a law enforcement officer in conjunction with the communications. The investigation is continuing and other charges will likely be filed in the coming days.

“I’m shocked, and I’m saddened. We simply aren’t going to tolerate conduct such as this by anyone, much less one of our own. I’m offended on so many levels— I’m not just the superintendent, I’m a father. And the fact that this young man was a police officer makes his behavior even more offensive,” Edmonson said.

“State Police prosecution of individuals who would seek to take advantage of our children is relentless. Governor Jindal has made child predator investigations a priority and as shown today we will continue to be aggressive when it comes to protecting our children,” Edmonson said.

The investigation which resulted in these charges was initiated after Williams began to exchange e-mails with a State Police investigator who was posing on-line as a juvenile. Williams e-mailed inappropriate photos of himself to the investigator and solicited similar photos from the investigator who posed as the juvenile.

“The content of Williams’ messages was clearly provocative. There is no doubt in my mind that he believed he was communicating with a juvenile and his intentions were disreputable. His conduct is inexcusable,” Edmonson said. “Nothing is more important to me than to protect the integrity of the badge that the public allows us to wear. Public safety is our number one priority.”

State Police Bureau of Investigation officers were assisted by the Louisiana Attorney General’s Office and the Rapides Parish District Attorney’s Office.

After being booked into the Ouachita Parish jail, Williams was transported to Rapides Parish where the charges will be filed. A bond has not yet been set. Indecent Behavior with a Juvenile is punishable by up to seven years imprisonment and up to a $5,000 fine on each count.
