Louisiana State Police Celebrates 75 Years of Public Service

Baton Rouge - Today, the Louisiana State Police celebrated its 75th Anniversary at a 10:00a.m. ceremony in the Training Academy Auditorium in Baton Rouge. The ceremony will include the Louisiana State Police Honor Guard, recognition of past Superintendents and Retirees, a tribute to our fallen troopers, comments by State Police Superintendent Colonel Mike Edmonson and a viewing of 75 Years of Pride, a historical retrospective of the Department.

Created on July 28, 1936 under Act 94 of the Louisiana Legislature, the State Police continues to be an organization filled with rich history. Its humble roots stem from the combination of the State Highway Patrol and the Bureau of Identification and Investigation laying the foundation for what is now a modern, well equipped and well trained department.

The Louisiana State Police has provided vital services to its citizens throughout the decades helping to shape our state and our country. From providing critical infrastructure security at the Huey P. Long Bridge during World War II to interdicting and investigating illegal weapons and narcotics trafficking, the Louisiana State Police has served at the forefront in ensuring the safety of Louisiana’s citizens. The department has continued this tradition through its participation in fugitive task forces, serial killer investigations, hurricane safety and preparedness, protecting children from sexual predators, traffic enforcement, and public education. The State Police motto, “Courtesy, Loyalty and Service,” was adopted in 1937 and continues to reflect the core values of the organization today.

Today, the Louisiana State Police remains committed to the public safety of Louisiana’s citizens and those who visit our great State. We continue to serve communities, uphold current and new laws, and provide a service based on integrity. This anniversary reminds each of us to reflect on our proud history and look toward a bold future.

"I am proud to serve as Superintendent of the Louisiana State Police as we celebrate its 75 year history,” said Colonel Edmonson. “This momentous day is not only to recognize the proud history of State Police, but to also honor and pay tribute to the troopers who died in the line of duty in service to Louisiana. We also remember the valiant service of the thousands of retired Troopers who have laid the foundation for today’s organization. We never lose sight that the badge that we wear is a privilege given to us by the citizens we serve, and is a representation of the trust the public has instilled in us since the inception of State Police in 1936."

For the next year to commemorate the 75th Anniversary, every uniformed Louisiana State Trooper will proudly wear the 75th Anniversary pin on their uniform. Also, all patrol vehicles will display a commemorative license plate.
