| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE Colonel Michael D. Edmonson, Superintendent HEADQUARTERS- NEWS RELEASE Troopers Urge Caution During Winter Weather BATON ROUGE- Weather forecasts for the latter part of this week indicate a strong possibility of snow and ice for parts of Louisiana. This type of weather pattern can be dangerous for motorists who are traveling along Louisiana Highways as we are not accustomed to driving in conditions such as snow, sleet and ice. The Louisiana State Police urges motorists to avoid traveling as much as possible. If driving can not be avoided, use extreme caution when traveling in winter weather conditions. Precipitation in the form of rain, sleet and snow can quickly cause roads to ice over, particularly on bridges and overpasses. As roadways accumulate ice, the Louisiana State Police, working with the Department of Transportation and Development, may affect road closures in hazardous areas. Should this happen, expect delays in commuting and plan for alternate routes to reach your destination. Avoid traveling as much as possible in these conditions. If you must travel during icy conditions, be aware that steering and braking abilities will be diminished. Drive slower than normal and leave plenty of room between your vehicle and other vehicles on the road. Increase your stopping distance at red lights and stop signs. Should you encounter ice, do not brake suddenly as it may cause you to lose control. Ease off the accelerator and gently apply your brakes. If you feel your vehicle begin to skid, release the brake and steer into the direction of the skid until you regain control. Winter is a good time to check the condition of your vehicle’s tires, battery, windshield wipers and antifreeze. Low tread on tires can cause a vehicle to lose traction in all weather conditions. Weak batteries can prevent vehicles from starting in cold weather. Anti-freeze will protect your engine and radiator from freezing up due to cold temperatures. Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle in case you break down. Emergency kits should include blankets, cell phone, flashlights, bottled water, and emergency flares. If you experience difficulties or witness hazardous situations while on the highway, notify your local State Police Troop office by dialing *LSP (*577) from your cell phone. For road closure information, motorists can dial 511. Always remember to buckle your seat belt and secure children in a proper child passenger restraint system. For more information contact: | |||
