Louisiana State Police, Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and Keep Louisiana Beautiful Team Up to Fight Litter

Louisiana State Police has announced that from Friday, April 17, 2009 through Sunday, April 19, 2009, Troopers will join the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and other law enforcement agencies across the state in Louisiana’s fifth annual “Zero Tolerance for Litter!” campaign. The weekend campaign, sponsored by Keep Louisiana Beautiful, Inc., will bring together law enforcement and citizens in an effort to keep Louisiana beautiful and litter free.

Louisiana has many beautiful attractions that million’s of visitors come to see and appreciate each year. Unfortunately, our visitors also see the trash that is present on our roadways. Many times small loose objects fly out of the bed of a pickup truck, and though unintentional, it still contributes to the state’s litter problem. Litter is not only an eyesore; it can also be dangerous to drivers and to the environment. Louisiana is vulnerable to flooding from our summer thunderstorms, as well as the massive amount of rains from tropical depressions, tropical storms and hurricanes. Most of the trash thrown onto our roadways ends up in ditches and storm drains, contributing to flooding.

“Louisiana is too beautiful to have its land and waterways marred by littering,” said State Police Superintendent, Colonel Michael Edmonson. “People come to our state to view our wonderful natural habitats. Our visitors and our residents should be able to enjoy our state without being exposed to unsightly litter. We are committed as an organization to fight this problem and I have mandated our troopers to vigorously enforce our state’s litter laws during this campaign and throughout the year.”

According the Louisiana R.S. 30:2531-R.S. 2531.3, penalties for littering range in fines from $50.00 to $5,000. Those who litter also can expect anywhere between four to 100 hours of community service, suspension of their driver’s license for one year and possible jail time of up to 30 days. State Police will be focusing on those motorists who not only intentionally throw items from their vehicle, but also items that are not secured in the cargo area of pickup trucks. Pickup truck drivers are asked to be cautious placing items in the beds of their trucks, as wind can very easily pick up the trash and place it on our roadways and waterways. Troopers will also be looking for uncovered loads of trash and illegal dumping.

The Zero Tolerance for Litter Weekend is sponsored by Louisiana State Police; Keep Louisiana Beautiful and Department of Wildlife & Fisheries Law Enforcement Division.
