| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE Colonel Michael D. Edmonson, Superintendent HEADQUARTERS - NEWS RELEASE “Doctor Shopping” Arrests on the Rise BATON ROUGE – Louisiana State Police Criminal Investigative Division Troopers have been busy recently working criminal cases of “doctor shopping”. Individuals who are addicted to prescription medications will go to great lengths to attain these drugs. One popular way for these individuals to get their hands on the drugs is to go to multiple doctors simultaneously for the same treatments. Unaware of the patients’ actions, doctors are prescribing medication to treat often times fabricated symptoms to the patients. Troopers have developed great working relationships with the medical community in an effort to stop this criminal activity and to identify those guilty of the crime. Through cooperation and education, Troopers have brought pain management clinics and doctor’s offices on board with this law enforcement push. On Monday, March 2, Troopers arrested Dennis Thomas (W/M, age 58) of Pontchatoula for “Doctor Shopping” and booked him into the East Baton Rouge Parish Jail. Thomas was seeing two different doctors at the same time for the same symptoms and receiving prescriptions for Morphine and Oxycontin. Clinics and doctors offices throughout Baton Rouge cooperated with State Troopers on the case, which led to Thomas’ arrest. The Clinic is working with State Police Investigative Troopers to ensure that this illegal activity ceases in its clinic. On Tuesday, March 3, Troopers arrested Susan Gill (W/F, age 50) of Livingston on the same charges and booked her into the East Baton Rouge Parish Jail. Gill was obtaining Hydrocodone and Oxycontin from multiple doctors throughout the Baton Rouge area. On Wednesday, March 4, Troopers arrested Michael Curry (B/M, age 45) of Baton Rouge on the same charges and booked him into the East Baton Rouge Parish Jail. Curry was also obtaining Hydrocodone and Oxycontin from multiple doctors throughout the Baton Rouge area. Louisiana State Police will continue to enforce the “Doctor Shopping” law, which was just enacted in the last regular legislative session. Louisiana Revised Statute 40:971.B.I has given law enforcement officials the capability to investigate these occurrences and to arrest the people guilty of this crime.
