Royal Canadian Mounted Police join State Police in the Fight on Crime

BATON ROUGE- In a continuing effort to foster cooperation and the sharing of knowledge between law enforcement agencies, Colonel Mike Edmonson, Superintendent of the Louisiana State Police, hosted a law enforcement exchange between criminal interdiction offices from and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and the Louisiana State Police. The exchange in March completed a project that has been in planning for over three years.

Members of the Louisiana State Police Criminal Patrols Program from Troops A, C, I, L and Headquarters traveled to Atlantic, Canada in September 2007, where they worked with members of RCMP’s Roving Traffic Unit. State Troopers traveled to Halifax, Nova Scotia to meet their RCMP Partners before traveling to Moncton, New Brunswick where they worked together side-by-side for the next six days.

State Troopers assisted the RCMP Mounties with the interdiction of illegal tobacco, marijuana, wanted fugitives and DWI enforcement. This weeklong exchange ended with a press conference at the Kodiak Detachment Headquarters where the RCMP’s Commanding Officer for Policing Services in the Province of New Brunswick greeted the Louisiana State Troopers and personally thanked them for their service. Troopers noted the prevalence of both marijuana and illegal tobacco in the Canadian provinces. State Troopers commented on the politeness of the Canadian motoring public, as even the arrested subjects would often apologize for taking the officer’s time.

In March 2008, members of the RCMP’s Roving Traffic Unit from Alberta, Manotoba, Saskatchewan, and New Brunswick made their trip to Louisiana to work with the State Police Criminal Patrols Unit. RCMP members flew into New Orleans on Saturday, March 8, 2008 and received an orientation and immersion into New Orleans culture and cuisine. On Sunday, they began work in the Troop L area with their State Police partners from Troops A, C, I, L and Headquarters.

State Police and RCMP teams worked in Livingston, St. Martin, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa Parishes and in an extended area around Baton Rouge for six days. During the weeklong exchange, Troopers and Mounties seized 3.25 kilograms of cocaine, 1400 pounds of marijuana, a firearm and $136,000 in U.S. Currency.

While in Baton Rouge, RCMP officers made a presentation to the Louisiana District Attorney’s Association and met with state and local officials. The group also took the opportunity to make appearances at local area schools to share some of their experiences with the students.

Colonel Edmonson would like to thank the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for hosting and participating in the exchange program and called it a huge success. “One of my immediate goals as State Police Superintendent is to build stronger relationships with other law enforcement agencies, whether it be local, state, federal or even international. It is through these partnerships that we gain the knowledge and expertise we need to be an effective and well-educated law enforcement agency. We feel it our duty to share our knowledge and training with other law enforcement agencies to find ways to better serve the public and provide them with the service and professionalism that they deserve. Louisiana had been well served by this week’s effort,” said Colonel Edmonson.
