State Police Supports Safe Mardi Gras Festivities Across the State

BATON ROUGE- The Louisiana State Police will be highly visible around the state during this Mardi Gras season. At the request of local governments and law enforcement agencies, State Police is providing security and traffic assistance to help manage the large crowds that accompany Mardi Gras parades and festivities.

In the New Orleans metro area, State Police is sending 120 troopers to assist Troop B (New Orleans) and the New Orleans Police Department. Troopers will be deployed throughout the French Quarter and neighboring areas beginning Friday and continuing through Tuesday evening. Troopers will be patrolling these areas in uniform and plain-clothes.

“The Louisiana State Police is committed to ensuring a safe Mardi Gras experience for all of our state’s citizens and its thousands of visitors,” said Colonel Mike Edmonson, State Police Superintendent. “In addition to our traditional support provided to the City of New Orleans, I have deployed Troopers in communities across the state to stand shoulder to shoulder with our local and parish law enforcement partners for this year’s Carnival season.”

In other areas of the state, Troop D (Lake Charles) will be participating in numerous parades. Troop D has teamed up with the Calcasieu Parish Coalition on Underage Drinking’s by having a “No Alcohol Zone” booth on the main parade routes. Troop D will also be assisting other agencies in combating impaired driving by conducting three joint agency DWI checkpoints over the Mardi Gras weekend.

Troop C (Houma) will have a tremendous presence in Houma by assisting in seven parades around the city. Troopers will also be in Golden Meadow, Labadieville and Montegut.

Troop L (Mandeville) will have their troopers assisting local agencies with traffic control in Bogalusa, Covington, Mandeville, Folsom and Lacombe.

Troop A troopers will be partnering with local law enforcement for parades in the towns Livonia and New Roads.

Troop I (Lafayette) will be assisting with parades in both Scott and St. Martinville.

The Louisiana State Police would like to remind motorists traveling to and from parade destinations to utilize *LSP (*577) from their cell phones if they encounter traffic emergencies or dangerous drivers. This free number will connect motorists with the nearest State Police Troop office.
