Joint Investigation Leads to Arrests for Soliciting Children on the Internet

BATON ROUGE – On December 9, 2008, the Louisiana State Police Special Crimes Unit, along with representatives from St. John the Baptist Sheriff’s Office, Tangipahoa Parish Sheriffs Office, and the Louisiana Attorney General’s Office began an operation designed to protect the children of Louisiana from sexual predators who use the internet to lure their victims. The two-day operation culminated in the arrest of two suspects. Agents are continuing their investigation and expect to arrest an additional suspect in the near future.

Agents arrested Marshall J. Burleigh (W/M, age 35), 8274 Frontage Road, Iowa, LA 70647 on December 9, 2008. Agents also arrested Patrick Landry (W/M, age 24), 3928 Gourrier, Apt. 119, Baton Rouge, LA on December 10, 2008. Both suspects face the same charges:
L.R.S. 14:81 – Indecent behavior with a juvenile
L.R.S. 14:81.3 – Computer-aided solicitation of a juvenile

If convicted of these crimes, the suspects face up to seventeen years, hard labor, in prison and up to fifteen thousand dollars in fines. They will also be required to register as sex-offenders in accordance with Louisiana state law.

Louisiana State Police will continue to work in cooperation with agencies throughout the state to ensure that the people who commit these horrible crimes are taken off the street, away from our children, and punished. This has been a priority of Governor Bobby Jindal’s administration and as such, remains a priority for Louisiana State Police.
