Winter Weather Driving Safety

With the prediction of potential winter precipitation across the state this evening, Louisiana State Police would like to remind motorists to use caution on the roadways. Louisiana State Police urges citizens to stay home, unless travel is unavoidable, and to exercise the utmost caution while negotiating area roadways. Motorists should exercise caution when traversing bridges and overpasses, especially on secondary roadways. Motorists who must travel should travel at speeds reasonable for current conditions, which may result in speeds considerably lower than the posted speed limit. Drivers should also increase the distance between vehicles and allow a greater stopping distance when approaching red lights and stop signs. If the vehicle should encounter a patch of ice, the driver should not apply the brakes, but rather, remove the foot from the accelerator and steer in the direction of the skid until the tires regain traction. For motorists who must travel, be sure to replace weak vehicle batteries, check tires for good tire tread and proper inflation, replace worn windshield wipers, and keep an emergency kit in the vehicle. The emergency kit should contain such items as a flashlight, blankets, bottled water, a charged cell phone or CB radio, and emergency flares.

Motorists are encouraged to report dangerous conditions but asked not to contact police to inquire about roadway conditions. For roadway conditions, the public can call “511” and stay tuned to their local media.
