HEADQUARTERS- NEWS RELEASE

For Immediate Release – December 6, 2010
Tragic Start to Christmas Season

Baton Rouge – The Christmas Season is off to a tragic start as the Louisiana State Police investigated numerous fatalities over the weekend. Troopers worked twelve fatal crashes resulting in 13 deaths between Saturday and Sunday.

“This is not the way to begin the Christmas Season. It was as if every time my phone rang this weekend, I was being notified of another family’s loss,” said Colonel Mike Edmonson, State Police Superintendent. “I am very concerned. We are asking for the public’s help. Louisiana is experiencing a historic low in highway deaths and we want this trend to continue. Our message is clear: buckle up, restrain your children and never drive impaired.”

This weekend’s deadly crashes are on the heels of a Thanksgiving holiday with a 62% reduction in deaths and a Labor Day holiday in which the Louisiana State Police did not work a single fatality statewide.

The Louisiana State Police will continue its efforts to reduce deaths and injuries on Louisiana highways through enforcement and education. Troop Commanders have been directed to coordinate proactive enforcement operations targeting impaired drivers, aggressive drivers and individuals who choose not to wear their seatbelt. The public can help by reporting suspicious or dangerous highway activity by calling *LSP (*577). Public Information Officers (PIO) will continue to share our safety message with the public through direct contact and the use of our media partners. If the public is interested in having a Trooper speak at an event, meeting or school, please contact the Public Affairs Unit. PIO contact information can be found at http://lsp.org/public.html.
