Multiple Efforts in Place to Keep Our Roadways Safe During the Holiday Weekend

Baton Rouge – With Memorial Day Weekend approaching, Troopers throughout southeast Louisiana are taking additional measures to ensure safety on our roadways. Several parishes throughout the Region 1 Area (Troops A, B, C, and L) will be participating in the “No Refusal” campaign, which has proven successful over the past two years. All of the Troops have also begun participation in the “Click It or Ticket” campaign, which runs from May 23 through June 5. There will also be additional Troopers on the roadways utilizing Highway Safety Grant Funds distributed to law enforcement agencies across the state to combat impaired driving.

“No Refusal” has been utilized across the state over the past two years and has been held up in court as a valid enforcement tool to fight impaired driving. There is a nationwide trend of increased alcohol consumption during holiday weekends. This increased alcohol consumption leads to additional impaired drivers on our roadways. Troopers will be on regular patrol, participating in DWI checkpoints, and conducting “saturation” patrols in problem areas throughout the region.

Troop Commanders across Region 1 would like to remind motorists to drive safely and buckle up. State law requires everyone in a motor vehicle to wear a seat belt when on a public roadway, regardless of seating position. Children should be properly restrained in an appropriately sized child restraint. Those who have had ANYTHING to drink should not drive, and no one should ever get into a vehicle with an impaired driver. The public can help to keep our roadways safe by reporting hazardous conditions or suspected impaired, distracted, or sleepy drivers. You can report this to the Troop nearest your location by dialing *LSP (*577) from a cellular phone.

Louisiana State Police wishes you an enjoyable and safe Memorial Day Weekend.
