| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE Colonel Michael D. Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP A - NEWS RELEASE Joint Effort Leads to Successful Sobriety Checkpoint BATON ROUGE – Louisiana State Police Troop A, in cooperation with Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office and Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, conducted a sobriety checkpoint on LA 42 east of LA 930 in Prairieville. The checkpoint was a success due to the combined efforts and cooperation between the agencies involved. Troopers and Deputies screened nearly 900 vehicles during a 6-hour period on Thursday, July 2 from 8:00 p.m. until 2:00 a.m. Thirty-four drivers submitted to the Standardized Field Sobriety Test at the checkpoint. Of the thirty-four drivers, ten were arrested and charged with DWI and two were booked on narcotics charges. Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries provided a field-vehicle equipped with an Intoxilyzer 5000 and Ascension Sheriff’s Office provided a prisoner transport van and additional personnel. Every year on the highways across the state of Louisiana, numerous people are killed or seriously injured because of impaired drivers. Sobriety checkpoints are effective enforcement tools because they serve as a deterrent to impaired driving. Not allowing impaired drivers to get behind the wheel of a car or boat and reporting possible impaired drivers to local police stations can potentially save lives. The public is encouraged to share in the responsibility of keeping impaired drivers from behind the wheel. The State Police number to call is *LSP or (*577) on your cell phone.
