Small Child Struck by Vehicle, Critically Injured

BATON ROUGE – Shortly after 9:00 pm last night, a nine-year-old boy was struck by a 2000 Ford Focus when he rode his bicycle onto LA 449 (North Corbin Road) from a private drive into the oncoming path of the Ford. Jerry O. Cook (W/M, age 51) of Walker was driving the Ford north on LA 449 when the child came out of his grandparents’ driveway. Cook was unable to stop in time to avoid striking the bicycle and the child. Acadian Ambulance Airmed transported the child to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital with critical injuries. Cook was not suspected to have been impaired; however, he voluntarily submitted to a chemical test for intoxication at the Livingston Parish Detention Center. Results of the test showed that Cook had no detectable alcohol in his system.
