2019 Labor Day Weekend Proves to be One of the Deadliest Holidays on Louisiana Roadways

Year after year, Labor Day weekend remains one of the deadliest holidays on Louisiana roadways where alcohol is a contributing factor. According to the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission, Louisiana had forty-four (44) alcohol-related crashes during the 2019 Labor Day weekend. As a result, five (5) people died, and sixty-three (63) people were injured. Last Labor Day weekend tied with Mardi Gras as the deadliest holiday for Louisiana.

While still dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Laura, Troopers, as always, will be patrolling to remove impaired drivers from our roadways. Louisiana State Police would like to remind all motorists that if you feel different, you drive different. Alcohol, prescription drugs, and other drugs have many effects on the body that negatively affect driving skills. These drugs can impair visual ability, alter the sense of time and space, impair fine motor skills needed to operate a motor vehicle, and decrease reaction times. Motorists are encouraged to use a ride-sharing service, taxi, or designate a sober driver. A designated driver is one who has had nothing alcoholic to drink and is also not under the influence of legal or illegal drugs. Not doing so can have deadly consequences.

Motorists that witness aggressive or impaired drivers are encouraged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the nearest Louisiana State Police Troop location. Motorists are also asked to visit www.511la.org for information on road closures and alternate routes.
