TROOP A NEWS RELEASE June 24, 2016 Unrestrained Driver Killed in East Baton Rouge Parish Crash Greenwell Springs – Shortly after 12:00 am on June 24, 2016, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a single vehicle fatality crash that occurred on LA Hwy 37 (Greenwell Springs Rd.) north of LA Hwy 409 (Liberty Rd.) in East Baton Rouge Parish. The crash took the life of 27 year old Rene J. Lanau of Baton Rouge, LA. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Lanau was driving a 1998 Ford Ranger pickup truck northbound on Greenwell Springs Rd. For unknown reasons the Ford ran off the roadway to the right. After leaving the roadway the vehicle struck a tree. Lanau was unrestrained at the time of the crash, and suffered fatal injuries as a result. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. Impairment is unknown at this time; however, a toxicology sample was taken from Lanau and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. A 21 year old female passenger and a 30 year old male passenger were also unrestrained in the vehicle at the time of the crash. Both were transported from the scene to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge with minor to moderate injuries. Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists of the importance of seat belt use. While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a violent crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Wearing a seat belt greatly reduces the chances of receiving serious injuries in a crash as well. Louisiana law requires that every person in a motor vehicle to always remain buckled up, regardless of seating position. Contact Information: | |||
