Department of Public Safety Continues 2015 Carnival Preparations

February 6, 2015

NEW ORLEANS – The Department of Public Safety is dedicated to making the 2015 Carnival season safe and has called on many facets of the department to do their part to make it a successful Carnival season. From the Louisiana State Police, the Office of State Fire Marshal, to the Louisiana Liquefied Petroleum Gas Commission, DPS is dedicated to the City of New Orleans, the New Orleans Police Department and the safety of everyone that is set to enjoy this 2015 Carnival season.

Louisiana State Police continues its preparation and starting Friday night, February 6, LSP will deploy 42 uniformed troopers to the French Quarter to supplement their partners with the NOPD. LSP will also deploy a uniformed patrol presence on Louisiana highways and Interstates in and around the city of New Orleans. Patrol troopers will be enforcing hazardous moving violations, aggressive and distracted drivers, as well as have zero tolerance for impaired drivers. LSP Detectives will also play a tremendous roll in providing a safe Carnival season, as plain clothes troopers and officers will be in the French Quarter area and working special details to combat human trafficking and prostitution.

The Office of State Fire Marshal is also working diligently with the New Orleans Fire Department to provide fire prevention/safety inspections throughout the city. OSFM will also work side by side with NOFD to provide fire investigation services. The OSFM will provide 27 uniform Deputy Fire Marshals to work in the French Quarter and Central Business District as well as provide K-9's with Explosive Ordnance Disposal and fire investigation capabilities. OSFM will also provide its Mobile Command Unit, Fire/Explosion Investigation Unit and the State Type 1 Urban Search and Rescue Vehicle in support of New Orleans Urban Search And Rescue team, TF-1.

Louisiana Liquefied Petroleum Gas Commission is also doing their part and is continuously conducting inspections in and around the New Orleans area. LPG has currently inspected 55 mobile food vendors along parade routes. Of those inspected, inspectors have found 7 not to be in compliance. Those that did not pass inspections have to bring their equipment into compliance or they will be forced to cease operation for the carnival season. Jefferson Parish has contracted a LPG licensed private contractor to inspect vendors within Jefferson Parish. LPG continues to work closely with contractors to provide guidance and assistance throughout the carnival season.

β€œMe and the entire Department of Public Safety family wish that the visitors, residents, and business owners have a safe and happy 2015 Carnival season by making smart decisions and making safety a priority,” stated Colonel Mike Edmonson, DPS Deputy Secretary.
