HEADQUARTERS - NEWS RELEASE Colonel Edmonson to receive Nationally Recognized Lifetime Achievement Award Baton Rouge, LA- Following a competitive nomination process among highway safety leaders from across the country, Louisiana State Police Superintendent Colonel Mike Edmonson has been selected to receive the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) Martha Irwin Award for Lifetime Achievement in Highway Safety. The award is presented annually to both a law enforcement and civilian representative demonstrating extraordinary efforts and progress in highway and traffic safety endeavors. Colonel Edmonson will be honored with the lifetime achievement award during the AAMVA 2014 Annual International Conference in Dover, Delaware. Colonel Edmonson has spent his entire 34 year career with the Louisiana State Police as a passionate highway safety advocate in various capacities. Early in his career, he served as the primary spokesperson for State Police Troop A handling public and media relations and delivering public safety education to schools, businesses, community groups, and industrial workforces throughout the Baton Rouge area. Throughout Colonel Edmonson’s last six and half years as Deputy Secretary for Public Safety and Superintendent of the Louisiana State Police, he has focused on agency partnerships, proactive policing, and aggressive safety education campaigns meeting with and developing relationships with every city, parish, and federal law enforcement agency in the state. Colonel Edmonson has either been directly or indirectly involved in every highway safety campaign in Louisiana over the last 34 years and has been the driving force behind the statewide development and implementation of the Traffic Incident Management system, a multi-disciplinary approach to keeping our roadways safe. In addition, Colonel Edmonson currently serves as General Chair of the State and Provincial Police Division of the International Association of Chiefs of Police. In this position, he joined 46 Superintendents from across the country in launching the “Drive to Save Lives” nationwide campaign with the goal of reducing the number of highway fatalities by 15 percent this year, saving approximately 5000 lives. “It is a tremendous honor to be recognized among outstanding highway safety leaders from our law enforcement partners across the country,” said Colonel Edmonson. “Throughout my career and time as Superintendent of the Louisiana State Police, my goal has been to reduce the number of tragic deaths on our highways through education, proactive enforcement, and infrastructural improvements. Together with our local, state, and federal partners, the Louisiana State Police will remain dedicated to preventing the unnecessary loss of life on our roadways and the accompanying suffering endured by families following these tragedies.” AAMVA’s Awards Programs foster a tradition of excellence in the motor vehicle and law enforcement community.
