HEADQUARTERS NEWS RELEASE May 12, 2014 State Police to Honor Fallen Heroes in Candlelight Vigil Memorial Ceremony BATON ROUGE – The Louisiana State Police will honor and remember the dedicated men and women of law enforcement who have made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting and serving others at the annual State Police Memorial Ceremony. This year’s memorial marks the first time that the State Police has conducted the ceremony in the evening, and a candlelight vigil will be held. The ceremony will be held at the memorial in front of the Louisiana State Police Headquarters on Independence Boulevard on Wednesday, May 14 at 7:00 pm. In the event of inclement weather the ceremony will be moved to the Training Academy auditorium. On average, 150 police officers from various agencies are killed in the line of duty each year. Since 1925, twenty-seven Louisiana State Troopers have lost their lives while serving the citizens of Louisiana. Throughout previous years, 26 fallen officers have been remembered in the memorial. However, this year through research it was learned that a 27th State Police officer was killed 82 years ago in the line of duty prior to the creation of the Louisiana State Police. On August 8, 1932, Highway Patrolman Geronimo C. Trevino of the Louisiana Highway Commission was struck and killed in Orleans Parish by an impaired driver during the course of an enforcement stop. This year Officer Trevino’s name will be added to the list of officers killed in the line of duty. “We have no greater responsibility than to honor those who’ve made the ultimate sacrifice for the citizens of Louisiana,” said Colonel Mike Edmonson, State Police Superintendent. “Each of the 27 courageous Troopers left behind loved ones who have had to endure their loss. It is for the family members of these fallen Troopers that we remember and pay tribute to them during this special ceremony.” The public and media are invited and encouraged to attend. Please join Colonel Edmonson in honoring the service and sacrifices of our fallen and their families. Contact Information: | |||
