Louisiana State Police and Drug Enforcement Administration to Host “Louisiana Heroin Summit" |
LOUISIANA STATE POLICE HEADQUARTERS NEWS RELEASE October 15, 2014 Louisiana State Police and Drug Enforcement Administration to Host “Louisiana Heroin Summit" Baton Rouge – On October 21, 2014, Louisiana State Police will partner with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and numerous other agencies in hosting a “Louisiana Heroin Summit.” The event will be open to the public and will be a way to educate the public as well as law enforcement about heroin use and address the recent rise in heroin deaths. State Police Superintendent Colonel Mike Edmonson will join other key-note speakers in discussing ways to prevent the recent growing trend of heroin related issues in our state and the Baton Rouge area.In 2013, the East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner’s Office reported 34 fatal heroin overdose deaths. This represented a significant increase over the previous year in which there were only 5 overdose deaths. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), in 2013 the Greater Baton Rouge area was ranked 19th in the nation per capita for heroin overdose deaths. Louisiana has also seen a significant increase in heroin related arrests and heroin seizures across the state during the previous year. In 2013 across Louisiana: · There were at least 310 heroin-related arrests made by Louisiana State Police and law enforcement agencies across Louisiana. · Louisiana State Police and local agencies seized approximately 152 pounds of heroin, which is significantly higher from approximately 21 pounds of heroin seized across the state in 2012. The 2014 “Louisiana Heroin Summit” will take place at the BREC Independence Park Theatre located at 7800 Independence Blvd. in Baton Rouge, LA. Doors will open for registration at 8:30 am with the event taking place from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm. This is a community wide event and the public is urged to participate. Admission is free and lunch will be provided; however, seating is limited so registration is required. Those interested are encouraged to register prior to the event by contacting the Louisiana State Police Fusion Center at 225-922-2001 or by requesting a registration form by emailing LaFusion.Center@la.gov.
