HEADQUARTERS NEWS RELEASE October 11, 2014 Louisiana State Police Sergeant Arrested for DWI after Causing Crash on I-10 Baton Rouge – Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A arrested a State Police Sergeant this morning after he was involved in an off duty hit and run crash on I-10 while driving his personal vehicle. Sergeant Damien L. Dyson, Sr., 34 of Baton Rouge, was arrested for DWI and several other charges after he caused a collision on I-10 in Ascension Parish. The incident occurred shortly before 2:15 a.m. as Dyson was traveling westbound on I-10 west of LA Hwy 22 in a 2008 Cadillac STS. At the same time, 21 year old Kevin Gomez-Castellanos of Gonzales was also traveling westbound on I-10 in a 2004 Ford Taurus. As Gomez-Castellanos was traveling in the left hand lane, Dyson's vehicle struck the rear of the Taurus at a high rate of speed causing the Taurus to run off the roadway into the median striking several trees before coming to rest upside down. Gomez-Castellanos was properly restrained and was uninjured in the crash. After causing the collision Dyson continued traveling westbound on I-10 before exiting at LA Hwy 44 and pulling over onto the shoulder. His vehicle had sustained heavy front-end damage. Ascension Parish Sheriff’s deputies responded to the location of the Taurus, and a Gonzales Police officer identified Dyson as a Trooper. State Police officials were notified, responded to the scene and assumed responsibility for the investigation. Troopers suspected Dyson of being impaired, and he submitted to standardized field sobriety testing. After performing poorly on the tests, Troopers placed Dyson under arrest for DWI. He was transported to the Gonzales Police Department where he submitted to a chemical test for intoxication, the results of which were 0.175 grams % BAC. Dyson was placed under arrest for Driving while intoxicated (first offense), Hit-and-run driving, Careless operation, and Possession of alcoholic beverages in motor vehicles. He was transported to and booked into the Ascension Parish Jail on the above listed charges. Dyson was immediately placed on administrative leave. Dyson is a six-year veteran with State Police, and prior to his arrest he had been assigned to the Protective Services section. “As law enforcement professionals, we have not only legal responsibilities but also high standards of integrity that must be upheld at all times while serving the citizens of Louisiana,” stated Louisiana State Police Superintendent Colonel Mike Edmonson. “Following a thorough criminal and administrative investigation, the Department will review all findings in this matter and take swift steps to ensure an impartial and appropriate course of action.” Contact Information: | |||
