STATEWIDE - NEWS RELEASE September 20, 2016 Is Your Child Safe in the Vehicle? Louisiana State Police, in conjunction with the Louisiana Passenger Safety Task Force and University Medical Center in New Orleans, are supporting National Child Passenger Safety Week across the state. Nationally certified technicians are ready to conduct seat inspections ensuring the proper installation of your child’s safety seat. Throughout the week, child passenger safety checkup events will be held across numerous parishes providing parents and caregivers with life-saving information regarding the appropriate vehicle installation and best seat for your child’s age, weight, and height. In conjunction with the safety awareness campaign, Troopers and community safety partners will be organizing events across the state on National Seat Check Saturday, September 24, 2016. There is never a cost for the child seat installations/inspections; however, parents should anticipate approximately 30 minutes of inspection time per seat. It is a proven fact that car seats and booster seats save lives. Child seats offer the best protection for children in the event of a crash. However, approximately 3 out of 4 child seats are not used correctly. This misuse rate can be attributed to the wide variety of child seats available, the range of children’s weights and heights, and the vast array of vehicles in today’s market. These misuses span all races, educational levels, and socioeconomic status. During the past 30 years, nearly 9,000 lives have been saved by the correct use of child seats according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). It is important that caregivers properly restrain children in an appropriate child safety seat, booster seat, or seat belt anytime they are traveling in a vehicle. “Nothing is more important than the safety and futures of our children,” said Colonel Mike Edmonson, Louisiana State Police Superintendent. “Please visit one of these locations and ensure that your child is properly buckled each and every ride. The preventable death of a child is unbearable and I urge anyone traveling with children to gain the education from the experts to safeguard the child’s wellbeing.” Thursday, September 22 Babies R Us (Lafayette) Babies R Us (New Orleans Area)
