Troopers Keep Focus on Impaired Drivers this Labor Day Weekend

Baton Rouge, LA- Throughout the Labor Day holiday, Troopers are working closely with our local law enforcement partners to remove impaired drivers from our roadways and keep our communities safe. Last year over the Labor Day weekend, Troopers had the difficult task of notifying five Louisiana families that one of their loved ones was killed in a preventable crash. With the increase in holiday gatherings and traffic, motorists are urged to plan ahead, designate a sober driver, always ensure all occupants are properly restrained, and exercise patience on our roadways.

“There is nothing more difficult than informing a mother that her child has been killed in a preventable crash,” said Colonel Mike Edmonson, State Police Superintendent. “Please, have a plan in place that gets you home safely this Labor Day weekend".

In conjunction with the national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign, motorists will see an increased law enforcement presence on our highways targeting dangerous driving behaviors such as impaired driving, speeding, unrestrained occupants, aggressive driving, and distracted driving.

Whether impaired through alcohol, drugs, or a combination of the two, the consequences of driving while impaired remain the same. Driver impairment continues to be a leading factor in fatal crashes across the state. A person’s ability to make good decisions is diminished as alcohol is absorbed in the body. This can begin after consuming just ONE drink.

For traveling convenience, motorists can take advantage of the Louisiana Traveler Information System through several different methods including the 511 phone system, www.511la.org, Louisiana 511 app, LA DOTD Twitter accounts, and the “Way to Geaux” smartphone application. Depending on the method utilized, the traveler information system allows access to valuable resources such as current road reports on crashes and construction, real time traffic camera views, and ferry status updates.

Motorists that witness hazardous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police. Furthermore, motorists are encouraged to follow the Louisiana State Police Facebook and Twitter pages (www.facebook.com/LouisianaStatePolice ) (https://twitter.com/LAStatePolice) for the most up to date information on roadway closures and state police activities.
