Impaired Driver Arrested in Construction Zone Crash that Injures Trooper

Baton Rouge – Shortly before 11:45 pm on May 23, 2019, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating an injury crash involving a Trooper on I-10 westbound east of LA Hwy 3246 (Siegen Ln.) in East Baton Rouge Parish. The crash resulted in moderate injuries to the Trooper, and resulted in the arrest of 31-year-old Volha Tryshyna of Baton Rouge.

The initial investigation revealed that the crash occurred as a Trooper was working in a traffic construction zone. The Trooper was stopped in the right lane in a fully-marked Louisiana State Police Tahoe with emergency lights activated. A construction “crash-truck” was positioned behind the Tahoe. At the same time, Tryshyna was traveling westbound on I-10 in a 2016 Jeep Cherokee. Tryshyna passed the “crash-truck” and struck the rear of the LSP Tahoe.

The Trooper sustained moderate injuries and was transported to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge, and is expected to make a full recovery. Tryshyna was properly restrained at the time of the crash and was uninjured, and impairment on her part is suspected. Troopers placed her under arrest for LRS 14:98 - DWI, LRS 14:39.1 - Vehicular negligent injuring, and LRS 32:58 - Careless operation. She was booked into the EBR Parish Prison. This crash remains under investigation, and there is no further information at this time.

This is the second serious construction zone incident this week that Troop A has investigated. As we head into the Memorial Day weekend, Troopers wish to remind motorists of the importance of driving with caution in roadway construction zones. Drivers should slow down when approaching work zones and follow posted speed limits and warning signs. Drivers should also be sober, resist distractions and remain aware of their surroundings as there are often workers inside highway construction zones. Taking simple precautions such as these can often mean the difference between life and death.
