| TROOP A NEWS RELEASE June 27, 2016 Motorcyclist Dies in Ascension Parish Crash St. Amant, LA – Shortly before 6:00 am on June 27, 2016, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a single vehicle fatality crash that occurred on LA 429 west of LA 22 in Ascension Parish. The crash took the life of 55 year old Jim Thoman of St. Amant, LA. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Thoman was driving his 2010 Harley Davidson motorcycle eastbound on LA 429. For unknown reasons, Thoman failed to negotiate a left hand curve and ran off the right side of the roadway. Thoman was ejected from the motorcycle and struck a utility pole. Thoman was not wearing a DOT approved safety helmet and sustained fatal injuries in the crash. He was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Ascension Parish Coroner’s Office. It is unknown if impairment was a factor in this crash but a toxicology sample will be taken from Thoman for analysis. Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorcyclists that Louisiana law requires that a DOT approved helmet must be worn while operating a motorcycle on Louisiana highways. Troopers also encourage all riders to take an approved motorcycle safety course. These courses teach safe riding practices and help you apply safe riding strategies that can help reduce your chance of injury should a crash occur. Making good choices while riding a motorcycle, such as never driving while impaired and obeying all traffic laws, can often mean the difference between life and death.
