TROOP G - NEWS RELEASE August 25, 2012 Fatal Crash in Webster Parish On August 25, 2012, shortly after 9:30 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop G investigated a two vehicle crash on Interstate Highway 20 east of Louisiana Highway 532 in Webster Parish that claimed the life of a Shreveport man. The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2007 Yamaha motorcycle driven by 30-year-old Derrick Wilson of Shreveport was traveling east on Interstate 20 at a very high rate of speed. Wilson lost control and the motorcycle fell onto its side, fully ejecting Wilson. An unidentified tractor-trailer then struck Wilson and caused fatal injuries. Wilson, who was wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Webster Parish Coroner. Toxicology samples were obtained and will be submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation. Excessive speed is suspected to be a factor in the crash. Speeding reduces a driver’s ability to steer safely around curves or objects in the roadway, extends the distance necessary to stop a vehicle, and increases the distance a vehicle travels while the driver reacts to a dangerous situation. Troopers encourage motorists to observe the speed limit and to drive in a safe and prudent manner. Motorcycle awareness license plates are available through the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles. Please visit their website at www.expresslane.org for more information. Funds generated from the purchase of the plates will be used by the Motorcycle Awareness Campaign to increase awareness and promote/support training and education efforts for motorcyclists.
