| TROOP G - NEWS RELEASE December 26, 2011 Stonewall Man Dies in Single-Vehicle Crash An unrestrained driver has died in a single vehicle crash in DeSoto Parish. On December 26, 2011, at 4:32 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop G responded to a single-vehicle crash on Dixie Swim Club Road, half a mile west of US 171, in DeSoto Parish. According to investigating troopers, a 2002 Nissan Pathfinder, operated by 56-year-old Courtney F. Smith III from Stonewall, LA, was traveling west on Dixie Swim Club Road in DeSoto Parish. For unknown reasons, Smith lost control of the vehicle as he attempted to steer the Nissan to the left. As a result, the vehicle rotated counterclockwise and traveled off the left side of the roadway. Thereafter, the vehicle entered a shallow ditch and collided with two trees where the vehicle came to rest. Smith was transported to Willis-Knighton South Hospital (WK South) in Shreveport, LA where he later died. Smith was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in the crash, but routine toxicology tests are pending. While not all crashes are survivable, the proper wearing of a seat belt and the correct use of age and size appropriate child restraints are still the best ways to reduce injuries and deaths in traffic crashes. | |||
