| TROOP G - NEWS RELEASE October 8, 2011 Tractor Trailer Crash in Red River Parish Claims One Life Red River Parish – On October 7, 2011, a single-vehicle crash involving a tractor trailer in Red River Parish claimed the life of a 40-year-old man from Providence Village, TX. Louisiana State Police Troop G responded to the crash at 6:22 p.m. which occurred on LA 1, just north of Armistead, in Red River Parish. According to investigating troopers, a 2007 International tanker truck was traveling south on LA 1 when for unknown reasons, the vehicle drifted across the northbound lane of travel and onto the left shoulder. The driver of the tanker truck, Kevin L. Hicks, attempted to steer the vehicle back into its lane of travel but was unsuccessful. The vehicle traveled off the left side of the roadway and overturned resulting in the tractor separating from the trailer. The tractor came to rest in the upright position on the grassy embankment. The trailer, which was loaded with diesel fuel, came to rest on its roof at the bottom portion of the ditch where the fuel leaked out. Hicks was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash but sustained fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Red River Parish Coroner. Driver fatigue is suspected to be a factor in the crash. Toxicology results are pending and the crash remains under investigation. Drowsy driving is a serious problem that leads to thousands of automobile crashes each year. To prevent drowsy driving and its consequences, motorists should always plan to get sufficient rest before travel and refrain from consuming any substances that would enhances drowsiness. Troop G troopers have investigated 22 fatal crashes for the year of 2011, which resulted in 25 fatalities.
