Unrestrained 9 Year Old Dies in Two Vehicle Crash in Iberville Parish

Plaquemine, LA – Shortly before 2:00 pm on June 27, 2016, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a two vehicle fatality crash on LA 75 south of LA 3066 in Iberville Parish. The crash took the life of 9 year old Asha Cooper.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as 27 year old Tommie Killough of Livonia, LA was traveling southbound on LA 75 in a 2005 Honda Element. At the same time, 34 year old Courtney Alvarez of Plaquemine, LA was also traveling southbound on LA 75 in a 2009 Jeep Commander. As Alvarez was making a left turn into a private driveway from LA 75, Killough was attempting to pass Alvarez in a no passing zone. The front left side of Alvarez’s vehicle was struck by the right rear side of Killough’s vehicle as she ran off the left side of the roadway. Killough’s vehicle began to overturn, ejecting 9 year old Asha Cooper.

Cooper was unrestrained at the time of the crash and sustained fatal injuries. She was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Iberville Parish Coroner’s Office. Killough also had 6 more juveniles and 1 adult in her vehicle. Killough and the surviving occupants of her vehicle were transported to area hospitals with injuries ranging from moderate to severe. Alvarez and the occupants of her vehicle were properly restrained and not injured. Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in this crash but a toxicology sample will be taken from both driver’s for analysis.

Upon release from the hospital, Killough will be charged with Negligent Homicide, Passing in a No Passing Zone, Driving Under Suspension, and multiple counts of Child Restraint and Seat Belt violations.

Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists that all occupants of a motor vehicle must be restrained, regardless of seating position. While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired, always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, and avoiding all distractions can often mean the difference between life and death.
