Troopers Investigate Dual Crashes Involving a Pedestrian in Bossier Parish

Bossier Parish – This morning, at 6:34 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop G responded to two separate crashes, one of which involved a pedestrian. The crashes, which happened within seconds of each other, occurred on LA 3, at its intersection with Hackberry Drive (entrance of Cypress Bend subdivision), in Bossier Parish. The crash sent six people to area hospitals with injuries.

According to investigating troopers, a 1997 Jeep Cherokee, operated by 47-year-old Huey G. Pickard of Shreveport, was traveling north on LA 3 when he approached the intersection of Hackberry Drive. While at that location, a 2005 Volvo XC9 (SUV), for unknown reasons, proceeded onto LA 3 from Hackberry Drive into the path of the Jeep. Both vehicles collided within the outside lane of LA 3. After impact, the Volvo rolled over and came to rest in the upright position in the median and the Jeep came to rest in the roadway.

Shortly after the crash, a motorist, 40-year-old Charles A. Mikesell of Bossier City, stopped to render aid to the injured parties in the Volvo. It was at that time, a 2011 Nissan Armada that was traveling north on LA 3, for unknown reasons, failed to slow down for the crash scene. The Nissan, operated by 62-year-old John Rance of Benton, veered left to avoid impact with the disabled Jeep. Rance then lost control of his vehicle, traveled off the left side of the roadway and collided with the Volvo in the median. The collision caused the Volvo to rotate around and strike Mikesell.

Mikesell sustained moderate injuries and was airlifted to Louisiana State University Health Science Center (LSUHSC) in Shreveport.

As a result of both crashes, the driver of the Volvo, 31-year-old Lacie Gussman of Benton and her two children (22-month-old and 6-year-old) all sustained injuries that were not life threatening. Gussman was transported to LSUHSC in Shreveport while her two children were transported to Willis Knighton Hospital in Bossier City. They were all properly restrained in their appropriate restraint systems at the time of the crash.

Pickard, the driver of the Jeep was properly restrained and was transported to Willis Knighton Hospital in Bossier City.

Rance, the driver of the Nissan was transported to LSUHSC with injuries that were not life threatening.

While the crashes remain under investigation, troopers urge motorists to remain vigilant while driving and remember that crashes are unexpected events. By taking precautionary steps including never driving while distracted or impaired and always obeying the laws of the road, motorists can substantially reduce their risk of being involved and/or injured in a crash.
