Bicyclist Seriously Injured In Bossier Parish Crash Earlier today, a crash involving a pickup and a bicycle seriously injured a man from Bossier City, LA.
Troopers responded to the crash around 3:20 pm, which occurred on Palmetto Road at Linton Road. The crash involved a 1998 Chevrolet pickup, driven by a juvenile (W/M 17 yrs) of Benton, LA and a bicycle, ridden by Bart D. Patten (W/M 53 yrs). The Chevrolet was south bound on Palmetto Road when the juvenile failed to notice the bicycle and collided with it. The bicycle was located next to the fog line prior to the crash.
The juvenile was not injured. He was charged with following too close.
Patten was wearing a helmet and received serious injuries. He was transported to LSU Medical Center in Shreveport.
Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation.
Louisiana law requires that an operator of a motor vehicle, when overtaking and passing a bicycle in the same direction on the roadway, shall exercise due care while the motor vehicle is passing the bicycle and shall leave a safe distance between the motor vehicle and the bicycle of not less than three feet. The operator of the motor vehicle shall maintain this clearance until safely past the overtaken vehicle.
