Edmonson, Superintendent News Release March 19, 2012 Inclement Weather Driving Advisory A significant severe weather event that includes heavy rainfall has been predicted for a large portion of the state which also encompasses north Louisiana. A substantial quantity of rain is expected to further saturate the area and motorists are urged to use extreme caution. Louisiana State Police are reminding motorists to allow additional travel time during inclement weather periods. As many streets and roadways in the area have the potential to flood under such extreme conditions, motorists are urged never to attempt driving through standing water, as it is quite difficult to determine the depth of that water. Travel should be avoided during periods of heavy rain, but if travel is necessary, motorists should drive at speeds below the posted speed limits to prevent “hydroplaning.” Always allow a greater following distance when driving on wet roads and be mindful it is illegal to travel around barricades. It is also important to make sure the vehicle is in good operating condition with good tires of adequate tread depth, working headlamps and operational windshield wipers. Headlights are required to be utilized when the windshield wipers are in continuous operation. All passengers should be appropriately restrained by a seat belt or age and weight appropriate child restraint. Motorists can report emergencies or hazardous road conditions to the local police or Louisiana State Police by dialing *LSP (*577) from a cellular phone.
