Pedestrian Killed in Early Morning Crash on Interstate 20

Bossier Parish – On August 20, 2011, at 12:13 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop G responded to a tractor trailer crash involving two pedestrians on Interstate 20 at milepost 30 in Bossier Parish. The crash claimed the life of 25-year-old man from Shreveport.

According to investigating troopers, 22-year-old Nicholas Johnson of Ruston was stopped on the westbound shoulder of Interstate 20 after his 2003 Nissan Altima suffered a flat on its left side. A friend of Johnson’s, 25-year-old Brandon D. Hewitt of Shreveport, arrived on scene to assist and subsequently parked his 2004 Chevrolet Malibu behind the Altima. While the flat tire was being changed, a 2009 Volvo tractor trailer traveling west in the right lane approached the disabled vehicle. For unknown reasons, the tractor trailer traveled off the right side of the roadway onto the westbound shoulder. Consequently, the right side of the tractor trailer struck Johnson and Hewitt. The tractor trailer, which was registered to FedEx Freight Inc, was being operated by 43-year-old Milton D. Magee of Clinton, MS. The Altima and Malibu were not damaged in crash.

Hewitt sustained fatal injuries from the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene by Bossier Parish Coroner. Johnson was airlifted to Willis Knighton North in Shreveport with serious injuries.

Magee was not injured in the crash and was ticketed for improper lane usage.

Toxicology test results are pending and the crash remains under investigation.

If your vehicle becomes disabled due to tire failure, remember the first thing to consider is your safety. If you are on a bridge or a part of the highway with limited shoulder space, then proceed with caution to a safer area such as an exit ramp or parking lot. Try to always carry some type of warning device such as flares or reflectors. Place these warning devices at least two hundred feet in the direction of approaching traffic. Motorists who experience vehicle failure during travel and needs assistance can contact Louisiana State Police at *577 (*LSP) from any cellular phone.

Troop G troopers have investigated 18 fatal crashes for the year of 2011, which resulted in 21 fatalities.
