TROOP G - NEWS RELEASE October 9, 2014 Crash Claims Life of Unrestrained Driver DeSoto Parish-On October 9, 2014, at 7:10 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop G responded to a report of a single vehicle crash on LA Highway 510, about four miles south of US Highway 84 that claimed the life of a Coushatta man. The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2005 Saturn Ion driven by 36-year-old Derick Jones of Coushatta was traveling west on LA 510 when, for reasons still under investigation, his vehicle veered off the left side of roadway and crashed. Jones, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene by the DeSoto Parish Coroner. A toxicology sample was obtained from Jones and will be submitted for analysis. Speed is also considered to be a factor in this crash. This crash remains under investigation. Louisiana law requires motor vehicle occupants to be properly restrained in every seating position, day and night. Wearing a seatbelt significantly reduces the likelihood of being seriously injured or killed as the result of a crash and is the single most effective thing motorists can do to protect themselves.
