Speeding Unrestrained Man Dies in Bossier Parish Crash

Bossier Parish-Excessive speed, alcohol use, and failure to wear a seatbelt are all suspected factors that contributed to the death of a man from Plain Dealing last night after crashing his vehicle in Bossier Parish.

On August 17, 2014, at 6:23 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop G responded to a two-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 3 about 2 miles south of Louisiana Highway 160. The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2002 Pontiac Grand Am was traveling south on LA 3 at a high rate of speed while attempting to pass four other south bound vehicles. While passing the vehicles, another vehicle approached from the north and the driver, 68-year-old Joseph D. Mims of Plain Dealing, swerved back into the south bound lane to avoid a head-on collision. Mims’ vehicle then struck a 2013 Dodge Dart driven by 33-year-old Jonathon P. Booth of Shreveport and caused both vehicles to lose control, exit the roadway, and crash.

Mims, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Bossier Parish Coroner’s Office. Booth, who was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash, was not injured.

Alcohol use is suspected to be a factor in the crash. A toxicology sample was obtained from Mims and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana law requires vehicle occupants to be restrained in all seating positions, day and night. Wearing a seat belt on every trip, whether it’s short or long, is the most effective thing motorists can do to protect themselves in the event of a crash. Motorists are encouraged to always make the smart choice and wear their seatbelt.

Troop G has investigated 11 fatal crashes resulting in 12 fatalities this year.
