TROOP G - NEWS RELEASE February 18, 2015 Crash Claims Life of Unrestrained Driver DeSoto Parish-On February 18, 2015, at 4:00 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop G responded to a report of a single vehicle crash on LA Highway 177, about one mile south of Interstate 49 that claimed the life of a New Iberia man. The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado driven by 88-year-old Leo Gaudin Jr. of New Iberia was traveling south on LA 177 when, for reasons still under investigation, his vehicle veered off the right side of roadway and struck a group of trees. Gaudin, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene by the DeSoto Parish Coroner. A toxicology sample was obtained from Gaudin and will be submitted for analysis, but impairment is not suspected to be a factor. This crash remains under investigation. Louisiana law requires motor vehicle occupants to be properly restrained in every seating position, day and night. Wearing a seatbelt significantly reduces the likelihood of being seriously injured or killed as the result of a crash and is the single most effective thing motorists can do to protect themselves.
