Crash Claims Life of Unrestrained Driver

DeSoto Parish-On February 18, 2015, at 4:00 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop G responded to a report of a single vehicle crash on LA Highway 177, about one mile south of Interstate 49 that claimed the life of a New Iberia man.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado driven by 88-year-old Leo Gaudin Jr. of New Iberia was traveling south on LA 177 when, for reasons still under investigation, his vehicle veered off the right side of roadway and struck a group of trees.

Gaudin, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene by the DeSoto Parish Coroner.

A toxicology sample was obtained from Gaudin and will be submitted for analysis, but impairment is not suspected to be a factor. This crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana law requires motor vehicle occupants to be properly restrained in every seating position, day and night. Wearing a seatbelt significantly reduces the likelihood of being seriously injured or killed as the result of a crash and is the single most effective thing motorists can do to protect themselves.

Motorists are encouraged to always make the smart choice and to wear their seatbelt. This crash serves as yet another tragic reminder of how important this decision can be.
