TROOP G - NEWS RELEASE

November 19, 2014
***Red River Parish Fatal Crash Update***

The driver of the 2012 Dodge Avenger 43-year-old Tracy Dickson of Campti was charged with Careless Operation following last night’s fatal crash in Red River Parish.

Troopers want to take this time to remind motorists to drive defensively and obey all traffic laws. By decreasing your speed and increasing your following distance, you can drastically reduce the chance of being involved in a motor vehicle crash. Also Inattentive and distracted driving continues to be a leading cause of crashes in our state, so avoid distracted driving at all times. More information on distracted driving may be found online at www.distraction.gov.

Crash Claims The Life of Unrestrained Driver

Red River Parish-On November 18, 2014, at 7:53 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop G responded to a report of a three vehicle crash on US Highway 71, just south of Louisiana Highway 784 that claimed the life of a Coushatta woman.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2014 Chevrolet Sonic driven by 44-year-old Salley Giddens of Coushtta was stopped in the north bound lane waiting to turn into a private drive when she was struck from behind by a 2012 Dodge Avenger driven by 43-year-old Tracy Dickson of Campti. The collision propelled the Chevrolet Sonic into the south bound lane, directly into the path of a 2009 Toyota Tundra driven by 24-year-old Derril Blanchard of Campti and the vehicles collided head-on.

Giddens was not wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash and died as a result of her injuries.

A toxicology sample was obtained from all three drivers and will be submitted for analysis. Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in this crash. This crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana law requires motor vehicle occupants to be properly restrained in every seating position, day and night. Wearing a seatbelt significantly reduces the likelihood of being seriously injured or killed as the result of a crash and is the single most effective thing motorists can do to protect themselves.

Motorists are encouraged to always make the smart choice and to wear their seatbelt. This crash serves as yet another tragic reminder of how important this decision can be.
