TROOP G NEWS RELEASE

March 23, 2014
Pedestrian Killed in Bienville Parish

On March 23, 2014, at 1:45 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop G responded to a crash on US Highway 371 about 3 ½ miles north of Ringgold that claimed the life of a Heflin man.

The preliminary investigation revealed that 25-year-old Zachary Malham of Heflin was lying in the northbound lane of travel on US 371 when he was struck by a 2004 Honda driven by 52-year-old Pamela Doyle of Heflin. Doyle applied her brakes and swerved to the right but was unable to avoid hitting Malham. A second vehicle, driven by 23-year-old Tedderick Williams of Heflin, also struck Malham.

Malham was pronounced dead at the scene by the Bienville Parish Coroner’s Office. Doyle and Williams were wearing their seatbelts and were not injured.

Impairment on the part of Malham is suspected to be a factor in the crash. Doyle and Williams were not charged.

Toxicology samples were obtained from Malham as well as both drivers and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.

Walking upon the travel lanes of a highway, especially at night while impaired, is dangerous and should be avoided. A majority of pedestrian fatalities, nearly 70 percent, occur at night. Pedestrians are encouraged to wear light colored clothing, reflective materials, and to carry a flashlight at night. Additional pedestrian safety information may be found online at www.walkinginfo.org.

Troop G has investigated 3 fatal crashes this year which have resulted in 3 deaths.
