News Release – Troop G
April 15, 2013
Fatal Crash In Webster Parish

On April 14, 2013, at 8:57 p.m., Troopers assigned to Louisiana State Police Troop G responded to a single vehicle fatal crash on U.S. Highway 79 south of Louisiana Highway 518 that claimed the life of a Haynesville man.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the Minden Police Department received a complaint alleging that a 2001 Chevrolet Malibu was driving in a reckless manner. Minden Police officers located the Malibu on U.S. Highway 79 and attempted to stop it. The Malibu did not stop and continued north on U.S. Highway 79 at a high rate of speed. The driver, 44-year-old Tony Burns of Haynesville, lost control of the Malibu and drove into a ditch on the right side of the road. The Malibu struck an embankment, traveled back onto the road and then overturned multiple times.

Burns was not wearing his seatbelt and was ejected. Burns suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Webster Parish Coroner’s Office.

Alcohol use is suspected to be a factor. A toxicology sample was obtained from Burns and will be submitted for analysis.

To report impaired drivers, motorists are encouraged to dial *LSP (*577) from their cellular phone or to contact their local law enforcement agency.

Wearing a seatbelt is the single most effective thing motorists can do to protect themselves from injury in the event of a crash. Louisiana state law requires vehicle occupants in all seating positions to be properly restrained, day and night. Buckle up Louisiana. Every trip. Every time.
