TROOP G NEWS RELEASE September 12, 2013
The preliminary investigation revealed that 2004 GMC pickup, driven by 27-year-old John Washington of Grand Cane, was traveling north on Louisiana Highway 175 when it entered a curve to the left, drove off the right side of the road into a ditch and began to rotate counterclockwise. The GMC then struck a downed rotted tree and began to roll. Washington was not properly restrained and was ejected from the GMC. Washington suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene by the DeSoto Parish Coroner’s Office. Alcohol use is suspected. A toxicology sample was taken and submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation. Seat belts are the most effective safety feature ever invented and have helped save thousands of lives. Sadly, one in five Americans fail to regularly wear a seat belt when driving or riding in a motor vehicle. Many people are seriously injured or killed each year due to impaired driving. It is important to never get behind the wheel if you are impaired or to get in a vehicle with a driver who is impaired. This decision can prevent injury or death to yourself or others. Report impaired drivers by dialing *LSP (*577) from your cellular phone to reach the nearest Louisiana State Police troop location or dial 911 to contact local law enforcement. .
