This morning troopers are investigating two related crashes that resulted in the death of two drivers on LA 1 south of Grand Bayou.

The first crash occurred at approximately 4:00 a.m. when 47 year old Dickie Roy of Abbeville, drove his southbound pick-up across the center line of LA 1 and collided with a northbound tractor-trailer driven by 53 year old Melvin Rachal of Natchitoches. Upon impact the tractor-trailer veered across the center line, overturned onto its passenger side, and deposited its load of coal onto the roadway. Mr. Roy, the driver of the pick-up, was killed as a result of the crash and Mr. Rachal was seriously injured.

The second crash occurred when a second tractor trailer traveling southbound crashed into the debris of the first static crash scene. 56 year old William Howell of Mississippi, the operator of the second tractor trailer, was killed as a result of his injuries sustained during impact with the debris of the first crash. The investigation is continuing.

To this date, Troop G has investigated three (3) fatal crashes resulting in the death of five (5) people for the year 2009.
