News Release March 23, 2010 Fatal Collision involving Unloaded School Bus
A three-vehicle crash in Bossier Parish resulted in one fatality and three injuries.
Around 7:45 this morning, Louisiana State Police Troopers responded to the scene of a crash involving an unloaded school bus and two other vehicles. The crash occurred at the intersection of LA Hwy 157 and Davis Street in Haughton. A 1994 Buick Park Avenue, driven by thirty-year-old Natasha Kirkland of Minden, was traveling east on Davis Street, failed to stop at the intersection (Davis Street and LA Hwy 157), and struck an unloaded 1995 school bus which was traveling south on LA Hwy 157. As a result of the impact, the school bus, owned by the Bossier Parish School Board and driven by sixty-three- year old Sue Thomas of Haughton, overturned and collided with a 2003 GMC Yukon which was traveling north on LA Hwy 157. The Yukon was occupied by the driver, forty-six-year old Melanie McHan, and a twelve-year-old male passenger, both from Haughton.
The restrained driver of the school bus, Sue Thomas, was transported to Willis-Knighton Hospital in Bossier with minor injuries. The two restrained occupants of the Yukon, Melanie McHan and the juvenile, were transported to LSU-S Medical Center in Shreveport via Life Air with serious injuries. The driver of the Buick Park Avenue, Natasha Kirkland, was unrestrained and died at the scene. Impairment of Kirkland is suspected to be a factor in this crash, but routine toxicology tests are pending. The investigation is on-going and no citations have been issued.
