| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE News Release February 21, 2008 Phony Medical Receipts Scheme Backfires On Thursday, February 21, 2008, Melissa Owens, of Shreveport, and her cousin, Christine Cummings, of Bossier City, were arrested for Insurance Fraud (one count each). In addition, Cummings was also charged with Inciting a Felony. On Saturday, December 9, 2006, the two women were together when they were involved in a one-vehicle crash on Sligo Road in Bossier Parish. At the time of the crash, they told the investigating deputy they were not injured during the crash. On or about Friday, December 15, 2006, Cummings devised a scheme to create false medical receipts and submit them to the insurance company in order to collect money to which she was not entitled. Cummings presented her plan to Owens who then agreed to participate. As a result of the fictitious medical receipts, the insurance company paid Cummings $1,789.00 and Owens $1,382.00 for medical treatment they never received. At the time she created the phony medical receipts, Cummings was employed as an office manager for a large Shreveport hospital. Both were booked in the Caddo Correctional Center. | |||
