| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE Colonel Michael D. Edmonson, Superintendent News Release October 31, 2008 Halloween Of all the things to be afraid of this Halloween night, encountering sex offenders in your neighborhood doesn’t have to be one of them. For several years now, the Department of Public Safety and Corrections, along with your local Police and Sheriffs Offices have been actively engaged in keeping kids safe each Halloween night. Two special initiatives for Halloween involve patrolling the neighborhoods looking for dangerous drivers and keeping a close eye on supervised sex offenders. Sex offenders under the supervision of Probation and Parole have very clear rules to follow during certain secular traditions and Holidays, the most significant regarding this Friday is that registered offenders cannot participate in any Halloween events. All supervised sex offenders who are not working Halloween night must be at home, with outside lighting turned off. Sex offenders also cannot open their doors to trick-or-treaters. To check any area for registered sex offenders you may log on to www.lsp.org or www.bossiersheriff.com and select the sex offender locator database. To put things in perspective, while we should certainly know whose door we are knocking on this Friday night, the most realistic danger to children this Halloween remains to be the times in which they are in and around cars. You can virtually eliminate all of these fears as well as increase your child’s safety by simply trick-or-treating with them.
