TROOP A NEWS RELEASE Unrestrained Driver Killed in Head-On West Baton Rouge Parish Crash Bueche – Shortly before 7:00 pm on April 21, 2019, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a two vehicle fatal crash on LA Hwy 983 (Bueche Rd.) at LA Hwy 620 (Section Rd.) in West Baton Rouge Parish. The crash claimed the life of 46-year-old Melvin Jones of Port Allen. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Jones was traveling northbound on LA Hwy 983 in a 2005 Nissan Sentra. At the same time, 29-year-old Jonathan Daisy of New Roads was traveling southbound on LA Hwy 983 in a 2017 Honda Accord. For reasons still under investigation, Jones crossed the centerline into the opposing lane, which resulted in the Nissan striking the Honda head-on. Jones was unrestrained at the time of the crash. He suffered fatal injuries as a result and was pronounced deceased on scene by the West Baton Rouge Parish Coroner’s Office. Daisy was properly restrained and was transported to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge with serious injuries. Impairment is unknown at this time. Routine toxicology samples were taken from Jones and Daisy, and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for further analysis. This crash remains under investigation. Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists that while not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired, always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, and avoiding all distractions can often mean the difference between life and death.
